Crappie fishin' on Caddo Lake

The weekend after Christmas (12/29/07, to be exact) hubby decided he'd like us to take a fishing trip to Caddo Lake. I was super excited because I love to go fishing and I love adventures/road trips even more! We got up at 5:30 a.m. so we could leave early and make the hour drive to the lake. Apparently the crappie (pronounced "crop-ee") are hungriest at dawn and so we needed to get there when the sun was just coming up. Here we are in the truck at 6:15 a.m.!

It was SOOO cold that morning! I'm positive the temperature was in the 30's! We both had on about 3 layers of clothes but that wind will cut through anything!

The boat launch was in the middle of what looked like somebody's backyard but I think it's actually a make-shift campsite. There are "cabins" you can rent; although, they looked more like shacks to me. We had to stop and pay the $3 fee to launch the boat...

and then we headed out for a full day of fun! The sun wasn't quite up in the sky yet but it's light cast a hazy glow on the water and Spanish moss-laden trees. The drive across the water to our fishin' spot was headache-inducing cold but the scenery was worth it when we got there. I love the way water looks so smooth and yet mobile at the same time. The milky sunshine made the water look like an enormous mirror and it was so peaceful.

We got to try out hubby's new binoculars and saw a blue heron scooping up fish in his big bill. I wasn't able to get any pictures of the bird because he was too far away. With the binoculars, though, he looked like he was only 10 feet away!

Our first stop of the morning proved to be the most fruitful and hubby was right in his element! Here he is doing what he loves best.

We traveled around on the water and tried several different types of lures (hubby did anyway, I just threw out my line with whatever he put on it) but unfortunately, the fish weren't biting like we had hoped they would. We went through a lot of minnows and even more hot chocolate but after about 8 hours on the water we were both just wiped out. Have you ever noticed how being out in the fresh air, wind, & sunshine just zaps the strength out of you? We headed back home with a decent catch and a handful of great memories. There's nothing I love more than just having a good ol' time with my husband. We have so much fun together and I can't imagine my life without all the fun adventures we have together. I'll leave you with a picture of my sweet husband with our final catch. It'll definitely make a decent fish fry!

  1. Ashlie,
You guys look SO cute!! You know, I am born and raised in Texas and I have never been to Caddo Lake - the only natural made lake in Texas. Wonders never cease huh?! Oh I remember those early mornings - I used to go striper fishing on Lake Texoma with my father. Can't wait to hear more from you - you and your hubby are SO cute together!!

  5. That's my lake! We can see part of the lake from our house. We will probably be having a ton of fun on the lake once it warms up a bit (not that the cold weather stops everyone :)).

Yes, days like that can drain you. They are priceless days, though!
