Fun with Frosting!

We had company this weekend when one of my husband's best friends from Tennessee came down for a visit. The two of them have been fishin' buddies for a long time and his friend was a groomsman in our wedding. He got into town Thursday afternoon and immediately met my hubby and another friend at the lake for some early evenin' crappie catching. I was only able to visit with him that night when they got home because I had to work this weekend. Since they're hardcore fishermen, the guys left each morning before I got home from work and didn't come home until I had already left for work each night! We're talking 11-12 hour days on the water, y'all! Now that's some serious dedication!

In honor of our friend's arrival, my sweet hubby had requested a strawberry cake (it's his new favorite) for dessert. Well, I had a creative itch and decided to try my hand at making a tiered cake and decorating it with the pastry bag(Ziploc bag w/ a corner cut off) and icing tip. So, I headed to Hobby Lobby and bought a special knife just for icing cakes, a 4-piece round cake pan set, and a tip for writing with icing. **I did a baby shower for a friend last weekend and the cake was 3 tiers with baby blue icing and white polka dots...hence, my inspiration** Mind you, I ordered the baby shower cake but I thought, "Hey, that doesn't look too hard. I could do that!" NOT!! Much to my dismay, decorating cakes is not as easy as it looks! Stacking the cakes even presented somewhat of a problem because it kept sliding around on the bottom layer while I was trying to ice it! And smooth icing on the sides of the cake? Ha! Needless to say, I'll need to either take a class or do some researching if I want to make a cake that people other than family will see. My husband, being the doll that he is, said it was great and he was impressed just because it was stacked! He's so sweet! Even though it turned out way worse than amateur, it was still fun to do. I love playing with new creative outlets!

Oh, wanna see my "masterpiece"? Ok, here ya go...

  6. Good job Ashlie! Your cake really does look cute! I think I've tried a double layer cake once and I couldn't even get the second cake to stay together. It looked horrible! THIS is why I use Mrs. Linda from church for all my cakes:) It makes me appreciate her even more when I attempt to decorate my own cake!

  7. Ashlie, I think you did a great job! The cake looks so yummy. I took a Wilton's decorating class at Michael's a few years ago and I was horrible at it!! To this day, I get a sick feeling if I think I have to make a cake...even without decorating it.
