Quick Tip #2

I have another little tidbit for you ladies whose men get grimy and grubby at work. My Sweetie always comes home smelling like oil, gas, grease, dirt, metal, you name it. No amount of Shout stain remover, OxyClean, or Downy ever completely got rid of the smell after I washed his work clothes. So, I asked my mom if she had any suggestions. She said that my aunt uses white distilled vinegar in the rinse water of my uncle's clothes (cause he gets dirty at work and runs a farm).

I had a small bottle of vinegar for cooking so I tried pouring some in the bleach cup of my washing machine. I was a little worried that Nathan's clothes would come out stinking like vinegar but then I remembered reading somewhere that the smell evaporates after a few minutes. After the wash cycle was complete, guess what? No yucky boy smells! Yay! His work clothes just smelled really clean and fresh! The next time I went to Wal-Mart I bought a gallon jug of the stuff & now I keep it in the cupboard with the rest of my laundry necessities!

So, you don't have to be very precise in how much you use (at least I'm not). I just pour some white vinegar into either the bleach cup or the fabric softener cup, depending on which one I'm not using. I've also read that vinegar is a really good natural antibacterial (I think?) so I put it in lots of other loads of clothes such as our underwear and towels. I like to think I'm getting stuff clean without loads of chemicals. Who knows, maybe it's all in my head but it seems to work!

Oh, and my grandma used to rub white vinegar on me after a bad sunburn. Stunk to high heaven but it took the sting out!

  2. I will definitely be trying that. There's not a detergent strong enough to get the gas and oil stink out of Chad's clothes. Thanks for the tip.

  3. Thanks for the tip! I'm gonna have to go buy some vinegar now! And the other day I was watching Jon & Kate Plus 8 (the couple who has sextuplets and twins!) and the mom is really into doing everything organic and saving electricity, and keeping everything clean...all that "go green" type stuff. Anyways, there was a lady on there telling her about cleaning products and she said to use vinegar and water in a spray container (I can't remember how much of each, though) for an all-purpose cleaner. So, that does make sense that it's a natural antibacterial!

  4. White vinegar is also real good for cleaning countertops and such...if you don't want to use harsh chemicals. And yes, the smell does dissipate quickly.

  5. The last sentence took me back...I can't tell you the times as a child I took vinegar baths and then got out only to have that cold vinegar rubbed on my sunburned arms and legs.

  6. Glad you all found the tip useful! I love finding new things to make my cleaning life a little easier!

  7. I am going to have to use this. Jerrame does the sprinklers in commercial buildings so he gets the nasty water on his clothes and there are some things that I have not been able to get out.

  8. Thanks Ashlie...I love this tip! Certainly will come in handy around my house I'm sure.

Yeah the sunburn/vinegar took me back too...it sure does help a sunburn and I never cared about the smell because it soothed so well.

  9. It's also great for cleaning out the freezer, especially if something has spoiled--that's all Willie's g'ma uses. Thanks for the tip. I'll have to try it on his coveralls. They have this burn protectant stuff on them that makes them smell like fish! UUGGH!

  10. I use vinegar for most of my cleaning needs. I use it in place of windex. Anything that needs sprayed gets sprayed with a vinegar/water solution. I also use baking soda instead of soft scrub. Everything smells so clean and yet there are NO chemical smells. (which give me profound headaches) We have no more chemical cleaners in this house. (gotta use a bit of elbow grease though)
